There are many different ways to get your personal training continuing education. Check out the NFPT, ISSA, NASM, and NSCA. Many of these programs are available for free. You can advance your career by choosing the right program.

NFPT

The NFPT provides continuing education and certification to fitness professionals. Their certification program covers basic principles in fitness science, back to basics fitness, and safe, hands-on training. This program is offered worldwide and is completely free. It consists of an exam that focuses on communication skills, training program development, anatomy & physiology, and fitness components.

Each year, to maintain your certification as a member in good standing of the NFPT you will need several courses. Most of these courses can be found online. They typically last between 60 and 90 days depending upon your schedule. Many courses are free of charge, which is a significant savings over other certs. The NFPT also offers free online retests for members to test their knowledge on new material.

NASM

The NASM personal-training certification program is based in scientific research and the expertise of fitness experts. The program is also compatible with occupational competency standards. The curriculum is broken down into modules that cover nutrition, human movement science and movement assessments. Students learn how to develop integrated training programs by using the NASM OPT model. The result is a highly qualified personal trainer who is able to guide clients to any goal they may have.


There are many formats for courses, such as online and in-person workshops. Each format has pros and cons. The following five courses offer a mixture of in-person workshops and online courses.

ISSA

ISSA's personal training certification course can help you become a certified personal trainee. It is available online at a cost of $595 plus $25 S&H. ISSA includes study materials and a free online re-test. You also get free phone and web support. The ISSA certification is equivalent to CPT certification. Every two years, trainers must renew their certification.

The Fast Track program can help you become an ISSA trainer. This course takes just four weeks to complete and is great for those looking to quickly jump start their career. You must be 18 years or older and have current CPR/AED certificate. The comprehensive course will prepare you to become certified personal trainer in no matter how fast.

NSCA

As a certified personal trainer, you will need to complete NSCA personal training continuing education to maintain your certification. Either you can complete the course online or take a proctored test. The course has 200 questions and is open-book. It can be completed in any order. The test is based on knowledge of scientific principles and practical application, and mimics the actual certification exam. Whether you decide to take an online course or a proctored exam, it's essential to know the material thoroughly before taking the exam.

The NSCA offers many programs that can be tailored to your needs if you're looking to improve your certification. You can attend one of several seminars that will refresh your knowledge and skills in different aspects of fitness. You can even choose to attend live workshops to meet other fitness professionals and gain more information on the industry.
